our story

We started Sea Sisters back in 2020. Growing up in Hawke’s Bay, we didn’t feel as though there was an established women’s surfing community. Often when we went surfing, we were the only women in the water. We decided to try and change that - and so Sea Sisters was born!

Starting out with a horse float and whatever boards and wetsuits we could find or borrow, we started to run women’s only surf lessons. We were blown away by the response we received and the support from our community. We were extremely lucky to receive funding from Sport Hawke’s Bay’s Tū Manawa fund, which kickstarted our initiative and allowed us to purchase all the equipment we needed to hit the ground running,

Since then, we have continued to grow and develop new programmes to empower women, girls and rangatahi within our community.

our philosophy

From the very beginning, a crucial part of our kaupapa has been to create an accepting, nurturing and empowering space for wāhine to take themselves outside their comfort zones and try something new. This has been the foundation that we have worked from in every lesson, programme or event we have run.

We know firsthand just how beneficial surfing is for our hauora and so we want to share the beauty of surfing with as many women and girls as we can!

To surf and connect with others, the environment and yourself is a beautiful thing. We are inspired every day by the people we work with and are so grateful to be able to do what we do - Niamh & Holly xx
